A shallow, powerful 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Cebu province in the Philippines on September 30, raising the death toll to 72 and injuring 294 others. During the earthquake, a dog named Luke was injured while bravely protecting its owner; animal welfare organizations are now treating him.
According to the rescue organization Hope for Strays, Luke did not run away when the earthquake struck. He shielded his family from serious injury by standing between them and falling rubble. While his family members sustained only minor injuries, Luke absorbed the greatest impact. His lower body was crushed by the rubble,
and he was unable to walk when he was found.
Rescuers reported that Luke was rescued around 10:30 p.m. on October 2, two days after the earthquake. He was later taken to a veterinary clinic in Danau City, north of Cebu, for emergency medical treatment.
Initial examinations showed that although it was still able to stand, veterinarians were concerned about potential nerve damage in its pelvic area and it was being closely monitored. Currently, the "Stray Dogs Hope" organization and Luke's family are appealing for financial assistance to cover its medical expenses.
